The following is a letter I  recently received from a former student I taught for 3 hours a day for three month a couple of years ago:

I don't know if you remember me, but I was a student of yours a few years ago. I moved to Austria shortly after we had our private lessons together.
I just wanted to say thank you. You cannot imagine the terrible teachers I've had since moving here. No one has been able to explain the German language like you. I still have all my notes and scribbles while taking your class, and they have helped me immensely here.
So in case you were ever wondering about me, here is what has happened since moving to Austria!
First of all, I got married!! Can you believe it?! He is a Bulgarian man with a daughter, who also lives with us. She has perfect Hochdeutsch and teaches me everyday on perfect speaking and grammar. You would be so proud :) Our family makes jokes constantly of the Austrian dialect here.
I have finally found a job, after 18 months of job searching. The only problem is the bureaucracy here in terms of paperwork. MAN there are a lot of documents to fill out or give here. I thought I gave them everything, but apparently I need a Bestaetigung that says I'm legally available to work in Austria with my residence permit.....even though what I have says I'm allowed to work. Sometimes I just shake my head at what is req, uired because it seems so unnecessary. I think I'm just used to the digital world of the US, and that has spoiled me.
Other than that, I love it here. Schwaelderschinken?? AMAZING. I eat that stuff all the time and I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. The nature here is breathtaking and I enjoy spending my free time exploring. It's something that Cincinnati does not have.
Anyways, I just wanted to give you a minor update since I haven't e-mailed you in forever. Unfortunately, my German isn't as good as it should be right now, mostly due to poor teachers here. You wouldn't believe how terrible German classes are here. I even paid extra for a private tutor and didn't learn half the amount of information I learned from you!!! You were an amazing teacher, and I commend you for the amount of effort you placed in teaching someone like me. A person who had a dream and only a few months to learn a language.
I hope you are doing well, and if you ever come back and visit home, I would love to have some Kaffee und Kuchen with you.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
